Overview
Vardzia was carved into the side of Erusheti mountain in the 12th century under Queen Tamar — thirteen storeys and six hundred rooms of monastery, stores and living quarters, with the frescoed Church of the Dormition still at its centre. On the way we stop in the spa town of Borjomi to taste the mineral water at the source in the park, and at Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, restored with its mosque, church and synagogue side by side.
