Overview
Half an hour from Tbilisi, Mtskheta was the capital of the Georgian kingdom for seven centuries and is where the country adopted Christianity. We visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, a UNESCO site and the burial place of Georgian kings, and Jvari Monastery on the ridge above the meeting of two rivers. The day continues to Uplistsikhe, a cave town cut straight into the rock with its streets, halls and a pharmacy still visible. Gori and the Stalin Museum can be added on request.
